The Sheffield Treatment And Recovery Team (START) is an NHS service that offers assessment, support, and interventions to adults experiencing problems or misuse of opiate and non opiate drugs, and alcohol.

START Opiate Service

Opiates or opioids are the collective term used to describe drugs like heroin, morphine, opium, methadone and buprenorphine. It also includes prescription drugs like codeine and tramadol. All opiates are highly addictive and you can develop a tolerance and dependence quickly. They can have huge impact on your life and the lives of those around you.

The START Opiate Service supports anyone who lives in Sheffield who is using opiate drugs, and is over the age of 18 . They provide information, advice, support and treatment to help you address your substance use and begin your recovery journey. Once you have been referred you will be seen within 7 days.

How can I access the service?

The Opiate service is based at: Fitzwilliam Centre, 143-145 Fitzwilliam Street, Sheffield, S1 4JP

They can be contacted by T: 0114 305 0500 or by E: sct-ctr.fitzwilliamcentrereferrals@nhs.net

If you are over 18 you can refer yourself or a loved one, either by phoning, emailing or dropping into the service. They also accept referrals from any professional you are involved with, such as GPs, social workers, pharmacists or probation workers.

If you’re under 18 support is available from The Corner.

Needle Exchange

If you are injecting drugs, it is important that you do not put yourself at further risk by using dirty equipment or sharing needles or other equipment. The Treatment and Recovery Team provide sterile injecting equipment, sharps bins and safer injecting advice to help reduce the risks to you and others.

You don’t need an appointment to use the needle exchange, and you don’t need to be in treatment.

To find out more you can call the team on 0114 305 0500 or drop-in to clinics at Sidney Street or at the Fitzwilliam Centre.

START Non-Opiate Service

Non-opiate drugs include cannabis, cocaine and crack cocaine, ecstasy/MDMA, ketamine, amphetamines, steroids and novel psychoactive substances such as Spice. Many of these drugs are very addictive and can have huge long term effects on you and those around you.

The START Non-Opiate Service offer free support to anyone who lives in Sheffield using non-opiate drugs, who is over the age of 18. They have specialist clinics for those who use Spice or steroids. They provide information, advice, support and treatment to help you address your substance use and begin your recovery journey. Once you have been referred you will be seen within 7 days.

If you inject a non-opiate drug, you can still use the Needle Exchange. Please see the above details for how to access this service.
