City of Sanctuary is a movement to build a culture of welcome and hospitality for refugees and asylum-seekers. In 2007, with the support of the City Council, Sheffield became the UK’s first ‘City of Sanctuary’ for asylum-seekers and refugees.

City of Sanctuary works by:

  • Participating in forums and networks around Sheffield to make sure the refugee voice is heard and acknowledged among policy makers, service providers and members of the public.
  • Welcoming newly arrived asylum seekers and giving them a basic introduction to life in Sheffield.
  • Managing the multi-agency drop-in at Victoria Hall where asylum seekers and refugees come for help and advice.
  • Having a team of refugee and asylum seeker volunteers who deliver talks and interactive sessions to schools, faith and community groups and service providers.
  • Organising events to enable people from different backgrounds to meet and share food and music and other aspects of their respective cultures.
  • Having a virtual sanctuary to ensure those who are looking for help are supported, connected and included.

The Sanctuary in Sheffield  is a premises in the city centre that provides a space for people seeking sanctuary where they can get support and advice, regardless of their refugee, asylum or immigration status. It is somewhere they can feel safe, whatever their race, religion, sexuality, status, political opinion or mental or physical ability. For newly arrived asylum seekers City of Sanctuary Sheffield provide additional integration support to give them a basic introduction to life in the city.

The organisation also participate in forums and networks around the city to make sure the refugee voice is heard and acknowledged amongst policy makers, service providers and members of the public.

The Sanctuary is open 10am-4pm Monday-Thursday
