Mermaids is a national organisation that supports children and young people up to 20 years old who are transgender and/or gender diverse; their families, and professionals involved in their care.

Mermaids helps trans and gender variant children and their families navigate the challenges they face with support, understanding and the freedom to explore their gender identity whatever the outcome or their decision. They also help provide a sense of community whilst raising awareness of gender non-conformity and gender dysphoria in young people, professionals who support them, and the general public.

Mermaids provide different support options:

  • Helpline – Open Monday to Friday from 9am-9pm: 0800 801 0400
  • Email support service: info@mermaids.org.uk
  • Parents forum
  • Teens forum
  • Multiple residential weekends per year
  • Local support groups (please note, there is currently no Mermaids support group in Sheffield).

Mermaids also produce plenty of resources on a wide range of topics.
